Why this place

A natural home for Sufra Time

Sufra Time belongs at Mocha Box because the coffeehouse already brings together Yemeni coffee culture, hospitality, and community. The room feels relaxed and lived in. People can arrive, find a seat, eat, talk, and spend time together.

The name Mocha also has a direct connection to Yemen’s coffee story. It comes from the historic port of Al-Makha, often written as Mocha, where coffee once left Yemen for drinkers around the world.

Yemeni coffee in Asheville

Something you cannot find anywhere else in town

Mocha Box is Asheville’s only Yemeni coffee shop. It is also the only place in Asheville to get Yemeni coffee and Adeni chai.

Yemeni coffee is grown on mountain terraces and is often known for deep, fruit-forward, chocolate, and spice notes. Mocha Box publicly describes its coffee as premium organic coffee sourced directly from Yemen. You do not need to know anything about Yemeni coffee before you order. The staff can help you find a good place to start.

From the pastry case

The pastries that look like real fruit

Mocha Box is known for fruit-shaped pastries that can make you look twice. These realistic fruit pastries are French trompe-l’oeil fruit pastries, made to resemble the fruit that inspired them.

They are a regular Mocha Box offering, not something reserved for Sufra Time, so you can purchase them during an ordinary coffeehouse visit. Availability and flavors may vary.

General Manager, Mocha Box Coffeehouse

Meet Sam

Sam helps run the West Asheville coffeehouse. He has worked closely with the Sufra Time team on hosting events and making the experience work in the room.

More than coffee

A place to settle in

The menu goes beyond coffee and chai, with fresh juices and smoothies alongside the pastry case.

Mocha Box is also a community gathering space. Its relaxed West Asheville setting works as well for meeting a friend as it does for sitting down with a drink and staying awhile.

Sufra Time lives here

The coffeehouse after hours

Sufra Time takes place at Mocha Box. The dining room becomes the setting for an evening of food, live music on arrival, stories, conversation, and Yemeni hospitality.

Qishr is made at Mocha Box specifically for Sufra Time. It is not part of the coffeehouse’s regular menu, so Sufra Time is when guests can try it here.
